The European Space Agency's (ESA) Ariane 6 launch rocket lifted off for the first time on Tuesday evening, 9 July, at 21:00 CET. Czech businesses have also contributed significantly to this launch thanks to ESA's Ariane and Vega Development programme.

"This marks the culmination of our efforts that started in 2016 when we negotiated participation in the Ariane 6 development programme. With €25 million, it was the largest-ever investment by the Czech Republic in the ESA programme. On top of this, this happened in an extraordinary situation when it was necessary to negotiate with other ESA member states the Czech Republic's entry into the programme, in which European companies were fighting for long-term and hence attractive contracts," recalls Ondřej Rohlík from the Ministry of Transport, who represents the Czech Republic in the ESA Space Transport Programme Board and participated in the series of negotiations from the very beginning.

Five Czech companies have won tenders to build the rocket and prepare the launch pad at the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, South America:
  • ATC Space s.r.o. manufactures the lower ring and upper ring assembly of the P120C accelerator engine and also supplies milled parts for the main stage assembly – this is the largest set of space hardware ever produced in the Czech Republic and also the largest business opportunity in the field of space activities. In the full operation of Ariane 6 this will amount to billions of crowns in turnover.
  • Výzkumný a zkušební letecký ústav a.s. (VZLÚ) worked on strength analyses of the launcher structure and, in particular, performed a series of strength tests of the solid fuel rocket engine.
  • Iguassu Software Systems s.r.o. worked on the on-board software, which manages telemetry when the transmission rate drops, and on the software for the ground segment, responsible for transmitting telemetry to the control and command centre.
  • UNEX a.s. supplied a set of 16 massive chassis, on top of which stands a giant assembly hall in which the entire rocket is assembled directly on the launch pad and which will travel a few dozen meters away from the launch pad only a few hours before the launch.
  • MCE Slaný s.r.o. produced a flame deflector located directly under the rocket engines, which diverts the flames into two giant exhaust ducts by a set of reflective surfaces and thus protects the rocket during launch.
"This is an investment that really paid off. Not only will the company, its subcontractors and partners increase their technological edge, but thanks to the capacity of up to 12 rockets per year, the 20 to 30 years of operation of the launch vehicle (which is the typical time for which one generation of rockets is used) will pay for itself many times over," said Václav Kobera, Director of the Department of Space Activities and New Technologies of the Ministry of Transport. With the rocket fully operational, Czech businesses are expected to receive contracts worth more than CZK 200 million each year.

This is a demonstration launch primarily intended for testing all of the rocket's systems and convince customers of its reliability as a worthy successor to the Ariane 4 and Ariane 5 launch vehicles that had dominated the launch vehicle market for decades. Still, there is payload on board: 11 pieces in total. One of the satellites, GRBeta, was assembled in Košice and the Brno-based company Spacemanic s.r.o., which supplied the platform for this satellite, and the scientific team of Professor Norbert Werner from the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University contributed significantly to it. The satellite will be used, among other things, to validate technologies for future nanosatellites that will be used to record and precisely locate gamma-ray bursts (or "GRBs") from space.
