By the end 2025, up to 400 000 driving licences will expire after ten years. Three months before the expiry of the licence, it is possible to request a new one via the Transport Portal and pick it up at one of the 10 000 delivery boxes and locations of Balíkovna. You no longer need to go to the office to exchange your licence.

You will be notified about the upcoming expiration by a notification from Transport Portal, or you can check the information on the card in a few seconds and order a new driving licence in a few minutes. It can then be delivered to the location that best suits you.

"The Transport Portal is most often accessed through a bank identity. You select the option to apply for a driving licence, a reason such as replacement after expiry or even loss of the licence, find a delivery point such as a pick-up box and pay the fee through the payment gateway. A notification will come that your new driving licence is ready for collection," says transport minister Martin Kupka.

No fee applies if the driving licence is delivered within the standard 20 days. You can now pick up the new driving licence in any of the 10 000 pick-up boxes and Balíkovna locations for CZK 100 or at any of the 206 physical offices free of charge.

"The Balíkovna pick-up box is available to users seven days a week, 24 hours a day. You will know them as Alza Boxes, OX Points or PenguinBoxes. The driving licence will be stored for two days there, otherwise it will be returned. Applicants can also use physical offices of Balíkovna, post offices or various small shops across the Czech Republic and collect the licence in there," says Adam Hőrzenberger, director of Balíkovna.

"Alza Boxes will thus get additional practical use, and there are more than 2 600 of them throughout the Czech Republic, compared to 206 municipal offices with extended jurisdiction. The boxes represent the future for urban infrastructure and this innovation clearly shows how they can be well used for the needs of citizens," says Jakub Krejčíř, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Alza.

You can order the delivery of your driving licence or driver's card to the box via the Transport Portal(www.portaldopravy.cz). You can access the portal in the same way as mobile banking with your Bank Identity (Bank iD), currently used by 6.5 million bank customers. On the Transport Portal, drivers can find such things as the validity of their driving licence, check the validity of their technical vehicle inspection and their digital motorway sticker.

The Ministry of Transport is cooperating with the state-owned company CENDIS, the State Printing House of Valuables, ICZ, Monet+, Balíkovna and the payment gateway Comgate, through which administrative fees can be paid on the Transport Portal, on delivering driving licences to the pick-up boxes and locations via the Transport Portal.

Frequently asked questions and answers

1.  When will the driver's license be available for pick-up? Does the statutory period still apply?
The period applies for the issuance of driving licences and is 20 calendar days, or 5 working days within an accelerated period. You must add some time for delivery to the pick-up boxes, which is usually 1-2 days.

2.  Will it be possible to track the package? How will I know if my licence is ready for pick-up?
The package can be tracked, a link will be provided in an e-mail notification. The applicant will be informed about the pick-up by SMS/e-mail from Balíkovna or on the Transport Portal.

3.  How quickly do I have to pick-up my licence?
Your licence will be stored for 2 days in the Balíkovna pick-up box and up to 5 days in the delivery points. The user is always notified about how long the package will stay in the box via SMS or e-mail.

4.  What do I need when coming to pick up the licence from the pick-up box / delivery point?
You will need the pick-up code to collect your licence from a box or delivery point. You will get this code in the delivery notification.

5.  Can someone else pick up my license for me?
Yes, someone else can pick up your licence for you if you give them your pick-up code.

6.  What happens if I don't collect my licence? Will it be sent back to the office? And if so, to which office?
If you do not pick up your driving license / driver's card on time, the carrier will deliver the package back to the State Printing House, which will send it to the appropriate municipality that is handling the application.

7.  Will it still be possible to apply online but pick up at the office?
Yes, you will be able to apply online and collect your licence from the local authority you have selected.

8.  Will it still be possible to get the driving licence at the office without online application?
Yes, this will also be an option, but you save time and money by filing through the Transport Portal.

9.  What shall I do with my old driving licence? Can I keep it?
You do not need to take the old driving licence anywhere, but it must be “devalued”, like with credit cards when they expire. If you want, you can bring the old licence to the locally competent municipal office.

10.  Is it possible to send the licence abroad?
Sending Czech driving licences abroad will not be possible.

11.  Is it planned to send also license plates in this way?
Yes, like with the driving licence or driver's card, it will be possible to send the licence plate or technical certificate to the pick-up box, but under certain conditions. The Ministry of Transport is planning this innovation in the coming years.
