Converting a road vehicle01/10/2020 21:00:00|Converting and manufacture of a road vehicle Converting a road vehicle Converting a road vehicle means modifying essential parts of the vehicle mechanism or construction: Modification of fuel type, installing different engine type; Modification of the body, suspension system and wheels resulting in change of permissible weight; Modification of the body type or superstructure resulting in the change of purpose and the use of a road vehicle; Change of the vehicle category. If you wish to convert a road vehicle, which is registered in the Road Vehicle Registry, you need to submit a written application to a municipal authority with extended powers. There are 206 municipal authorities with extended powers in the Czech Republic (see map below). If you wish to perform a large-scale modification of a vehicle type, you need to apply at the Ministry of Transport. Application for approval of modification The application must include: Other requirements Detailed description of conversion of the road vehicle; Proposal to change information entered in the registration certificate of a vehicle; Technical specification and design documentation showing the vehicle system, construction parts or separate technical unit of the vehicle, if technical capacity has not been approved; Technical protocol issued by a testing station and a certified technical service if it concerns large-scale modification. Useful tips The maximum permissible weight of the road vehicle can be lowered only when converting the vehicle to a special vehicle for a single-purpose use. Converting a vehicle should not change its category, if the new category falls under stricter technical requirements set by an implementing act in terms of brakes, external noise, emission of pollutants in exhaust fumes or features of active and passive safety. Conversion of a vehicle by changing its body can be allowed only within one vehicle type series. If a vehicle part or equipment is being replaced or added, such part or equipment must comply with conditions set in Act No. 56/2001 Coll. If the vehicle manufacturer proclaims an essential part of the mechanism or construction as a substitute part to the vehicle, it is not recognised as a conversion of road vehicle. In case of a conversion of vehicle, even subsequent one, at least one original essential part of the mechanism or construction must be preserved. Other conditions for converting road vehicle are provided for in paragraph 29 of decree no. 341/2014 Coll.
