On Tuesday February 7, 2017 the period for funding applications in the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) expired. Since 2014, this was the third and last possibility how to get this European funding. Applicants submitted 30 projects amounting to EUR 988 million.

CEF funding was requested for 30 transportation projects worth one billion CZK

Railway infrastructure modernisation, prepared by the Railway Infrastructure Administration (RIA), dominated the applications, including such projects as the rebuilding of the Přerov railway hub and modernisation of the Prague Vysočany – Lysá nad Labem route. RSD Czech Republic (the Motorway and Road Administration Authority) applied, among other things, for co-funding of an almost 6-km long D52 motorway section from Perná to state border with Austria. Applicants also submitted projects targeting the use of alternative fuels in transportation, projects connected with domestic water transport, development of ground and air traffic control systems, projects aimed at higher safety and railway transport interoperability. The Czech Republic prepared a total of EUR 1.113 billion for these projects in the so-called "national envelope", of which EUR 837 million have already been allocated under the two previous calls.

The Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA), authorised with CEF administration by the European Commission, will evaluate the applications during the coming weeks and months. First results will be probably published at the end of May 2017. The final amount that will be allocated to the projects will be defined by the end of 2017 following the signature of grant agreements.

CEF supports investments in new transport infrastructure and/or renewal and modernisation of existing infrastructure. It primarily targets cross-border road sections and seeks to eliminate bottlenecks and missing sections of the TEN-t core and global network. This instrument was established for the 2014-2020 funding period and a total of EUR 24 billion have been allocated for the transport domain for all member states.
