The Ministry of Transport, Správa železnic and the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure concluded a memorandum of cooperation with the South Moravian Region and the City of Brno on the preparation and implementation of the reconstruction of the Brno railway node. The project, which also includes the relocation of the main railway station in Brno, the construction of a new transfer terminal in Černovice and the modernisation of railway lines in Brno, is expected to cost up to CZK 50 billion. Construction work could start in 2028 and will take 6 years.

"The feasibility study, with the selection of a variant, was prepared and approved by the Ministry of Transport. Both the region and the city favoured the location of the new main station by the "River". We have the final planning permit and Správa železnic is now proceeding with the preparation of the railway station relocation," transport minister Martin Kupkasummarises the current state of preparations.

The memorandum signed declares cooperation of the Ministry of Transport, Správa železnic, the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure, the South Moravian Region and the Statutory City of Brno in the preparation and implementation of the modernisation of the Brno railway node and related construction. "We have been waiting far too long for a new station. I am happy that there has been progress in the preparation of the entire project and it seems that construction will actually start in a few years," adds Jan Grolich, the Governor of the South Moravian Region.

In cooperation with the city of Brno, an international architectural competition for the design of the new Brno railway station was announced and successfully completed. "Thanks to the winning design of the Dutch team Benthem Crouwel Architects and West 8, we know what the new railway station will look like. The architects have, together with other experts, already started working on a detailed study of the design of the entire main station site and its surroundings," says Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková.

"Správa železnic is working intensively on the preparation of high-speed lines construction. A feasibility study was prepared for the Prague – Brno – Břeclav/Ostrava HSL, which means that the modernisation of the Brno railway node, as planned, can be well coordinated with future HS projects. Related construction projects, highly relevant for the Brno agglomeration, are also being implemented. Electrification of the line to Zastávka u Brna is one such example," says Mojmír Nejezchleb, deputy director general for line modernisation with Správa železnic.

All the signatories of the memorandum are ready to jointly participate in zoning, prepare architectural solutions of transport terminals, examine the so-called “North-South Rail Line” (“Brno metro”), prepare the design, handle the property agenda and provide funding as investors.

"Sufficient funds are secured in the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure budget for the year 2023 for the smooth preparation of the reconstruction of the Brno railway node. I believe that there will be sufficient funds in our budget for the preparation and implementation of this project in future years," informs Zbyněk Hořelica, Director of the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.

The new Brno railway station is only one of a whole set of developments that cover the complete modernisation of the railway infrastructure in Brno. After the project plan has been prepared and approved by the Ministry of Transport at the end of this year, further design levels will follow, for which the architectural study prepared by the winning team will be the binding basis.

The reconstruction of the Brno node as a whole will start in 2028, with one of the first milestones being the approval of the project plan. If everything goes according to current assumptions, the new railway station will be fully operational in 2034.
