Drivers will start seeing new traffic signs in 2024

Drivers will see new traffic signs on our motorways and roads next year. The Legislative Council of the Government approved an amendment to Decree No. 294/2015 Coll. The changed contained therein are based on changes within the framework of the approved major Road Traffic Act amendment and at the same time incorporate experience from practice in response to current trends in road traffic. The use and placement of new signs can be decided by the competent administrative authorities from 1 January 2024.

"The amendment to the Road Traffic Act brings a number of changes to our roads from 1 January. That's why we are coming up with new types of traffic signs that respond to some of these new developments. Drivers will now encounter signs on their journeys warning of the beginning and end of a shared zone or of keeping a safe distance when driving on the motorway," says Transport Minister Martin Kupka.

The main innovations in traffic signs include:
  • Introduction of traffic signs IZ 10a "Shared zone" and IZ 10b "End of shared zone” – they will mark the area of the shared zone, a new traffic and urban solution to places intended for use by all road users. Shared zones, which can now be established as part of the redevelopment of town centres to optimise the use of public space and at the same time to calm traffic.
  • The introduction of the traffic sign IP 30f "P+D Parking” (Park & Drive) – marked by the type of parking intended for parking vehicles whose drivers will proceed to the city centre as passengers in another vehicle. Unlike existing P+R or K+R parking, there is no change in the mode of transport here but only a transfer of more people to another vehicle. P+D parking has been successfully operated in Austria, Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. A good prospective use of this parking is in the vicinity of the exit from D1 Velké Popovice.
  • Modification of the visual form of the traffic sign IP 32 "Safe distance " – the modified form of the sign will be easier for drivers to understand and better remind them how to keep the distance correctly. While the sign previously depicted one vehicle and two arrows behind it, now there are two arrows between two cars. This creates a convenient mnemonic device, safe distance = 2 seconds = 2 arrows.
  • New design of the electric car and e-scooter pictogram – the change in the visual design of the symbol 211 for an electric car brings it into line with the symbol most commonly used across EU countries and therefore makes the marking more understandable to foreign drivers. By introducing the designated symbol No. 229 for the electric scooter, we are responding to the current boom in this urban means of transport.
  • Introduction of special vehicle designation O 5c "Field Social Service – vehicles of field social service operators will be used to prove parking entitlement.
For example, the new traffic sign IJ 15 "Service point for sanitation of the sanitary facilities of motor homes" or a modification of the meaning and use of the traffic sign IS 20 "Signal before the junction for cyclists" are also being introduced. "We are convinced that the new traffic signs will make it easier for drivers to find their way around the traffic and help them follow the traffic rules without any problems," says Stanislav Dvořák, Director of the Department of Driver Agendas of the Ministry of Transport.

The type of road decides which authority can place the traffic sign. For motorways the Ministry of Transport decides on the placement of the signs after the Ministry of the Interior has given its opinion. For category I roads, this decision-making falls within the competence of the locally competent regional authority with the need for a statement from the Police of the Czech Republic. For category II and III roads the placement of signs is decided by the municipalities, again requiring the opinion of the Police.

Thanks to transitional provisions, the current signs will not have to be changed with the new design. With a view to minimising costs and the life cycle of traffic signs, the transitional provision is set at 10 years.
