EU rules for some driving licence groups are already governed by the law effective from July25/1/2018|Press releasesThe requirements EU directive on rules for driving licences of category C/C1 and D/D1 are already met in the applicable amendment to the road traffic law, effective from July, 1, 2018. This way, the Ministry of Transport responded to the objections of the European Commission which the EU Court of Justice also confirmed today. The Ministry of Transport believes that no more lawsuites by the European Commission, enforcing monetary sanctions on the Czech Republic, will follow the judgement. Under the road traffic act, categories C and C1 will only apply to trucks, not to vehicles the primary function of which is the transport of persons. For these, the D/D1 driving licence category will be needed. The practical implication of these rules on drivers is negligible. The reason is that already today the C/C1 driving licence is limited to driving vehicles for up to 8 persons plus the driver. The weight of most small buses for up to 8 persons is in practice up to 3.5t, so they can be driven with the B-type driving licence. Vehicles of more than 3.5t and those designated for the transportation of less than 8 persons are an unimportant category. This includes for example some limousines or armoured cars intended for passenger transport.
