The long-awaited construction of the D11 motorway from Trutnov to the Polish border has started28/11/2024|Press releasesŘSD, the Road and Motorway Directorate, started construction of the D11 motorway section from Trutnov to the state border with Poland. It is the largest motorway contract in the history of public tenders of the Road and Motorway Directorate. Work on the 21.2-kilometre-long section will cost CZK 11.7 billion excluding VAT and will take 3.5 years. The contractor will first build a three-kilometre section near the border with Poland, which will connect to the Polish S3 speedway and should be operational in the spring of 2026. Next year, ŘSD will start building the last missing section of the D11 from Jaroměř to Trutnov. "We are starting one of the most anticipated projects, where all obstacles have been overcome and we can finally kick the project off. The D11 motorway is one of the essential parts of the Czech road network. It connects Prague with the east of Bohemia. After the completion of D11, all Czechs will find themselves closer to the Baltic Sea, because the Polish S3 motorway will then connect the Czech border and Gdansk. The D11 motorway is important for whole Europe as such. According to an international agreement, it belongs to the European transport corridor connecting Western and Eastern Europe," says transport minister Martin Kupka. Construction will include two 500m tunnels, 28 bridges, three off-grade crossings and ten noise barriers totalling 1,615 metres. One tunnel, 550 metres long, will be under the Poříčský ridge and the other, called Opevnění (“Fortification”), will have 492 metres. There will be 13 major bridges across the valley, each more than 100 metres long. There will be three large bridge structures: the longest one with 715 metres is the Poříčí Bridge, then a 670-metre long and seven-pole bridge over the valley of the Ličná River and the 330-metre long Lampertice Bridge. Two rest areas will be situated along this motorway section: Královec and Bernartice. "This is an extremely challenging investment, one of the most demanding in the history of ŘSD. With the completion of this section of the D11 motorway, a high-quality cross-border connection with Poland will be created, offering a new high-capacity road that will take over the function of the current congested and dangerous I/16 road. Together with the I/37 road, it connects the important regional centres of Jaroměř, Dvůr Králové nad Labem and Trutnov with Poland. Despite the great difficulty of construction, the first drivers will be able to drive on the new motorway in 3.5 years and on the three kilometres at the border with Poland in a year and a half. This will significantly relieve the Polish Lubawka and the Czech Královec," said Radek Mátl, Director General of ŘSD. ŘSD is working hard on the preparation of the last remaining, still unbuilt part of the D11 motorway from Jaroměř to Trutnov. Construction on the nearly 20-kilometre-long section is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, with drivers expected to drive along it for the first time in 2028. Construction of the D11 motorway from Prague to Hradec Králové and to the border with Poland began in 1978. Until today, 113 kilometres of the planned 154 kilometres have been completed. The motorway currently ends at the edge of Jaroměř. The investment is proposed for co-financing from the Cohesion Fund within the Transport 2021-2027 Programme (OPD3).
