The Tour d' Europe project aims to showcase the potential of decarbonising transport by using liquid renewable fuels or low-carbon, high-emission fuels. The Czech Petroleum Industry Association, invited, under the auspices of the Minister of Transport Martin Kupka, experts and representatives of the state administration and presented them in front of the entrance to the Ministry of Transport.

"We have long said that we are in favour of technological neutrality. Therefore, at the European level and within the framework of the so-called Alliance for the Defence of Competitiveness, we are advocating for greater freedom in meeting emission targets, real technological neutrality, the lifting of the ban on internal combustion engines after 2035 and a number of other steps that will lead to the preservation of the availability of European vehicles and jobs in the automotive industry," said transport minister Martin Kupka.

The Tour d' Europe project is an initiative of the European association FuelsEurope, the automotive industry and the Bosch Group. "It shall raise awareness of the current wide availability of liquid renewable fuels or low-carbon, high-emission fuels in Europe and highlight their role in achieving the EU's climate targets in rapid pace using the existing infrastructure of petrol stations and internal combustion engines," said Jan Duspěva, CEO of ČEPRO.

In its presentation on mobility in the Czech Republic and the possibilities of its decarbonisation, FuelsEurope shared up-to-date knowledge on the implementation of emission targets in transport within the EU. A representative of the Czech Petroleum Industry and Trade Association focused on the structure of the Czech car fleet and the implementation of the relevant EU directives into the Czech legal system and was critical about the impact of the introduction of emission permits into transport.

Prof. Milan Pospíšil, Rector of the University of Applied Sciences in Prague, presented the MOSUMO Project (a long-term project to analyse the feasibility of decarbonising transport in the Czech Republic), and a representative of BOSCH spoke about the possibility of monitoring compliance with the rules of using low-emission fuels directly in the vehicle.

The meeting offered knowledge about low-emission vehicles that are commonly available on the EU market.

The mission and vision of the project and its Europe-wide context is to:

  • show that renewable liquid fuels play a key role alongside other solutions in decarbonising road transport and that EU policy should be technology-neutral and open to all technologies with proven success,
  • demonstrate that renewable liquid fuels are available and easy to use, delivering significant greenhouse gas reductions in existing technologies, fleet structure and infrastructure,
  • demonstrate that the use of renewable fuels and the CO2 intensity of fuels can be monitored and verified directly in the vehicle,
  • highlight that technological neutrality should be a fundamental principle for all vehicle segments to achieve the EU's 2050 climate targets for the benefit of European citizens and businesses, because decarbonising road transport will require all solutions, not just electrification,
  • show that this technological openness will allow EU industries to remain pioneers in technology where they are now world leaders,
  • introduce the use of renewable fuels across Europe and demonstrate that their production in the EU contributes to energy security,
  • prove that renewable fuels can be an immediate, fast and affordable solution to enable all Europeans to participate in the energy transition and reduce transport emissions.
